The Bet by Anton Chekhov: Critical Analysis

INTRODUCTION  If you could have freedom, how far would you go? The provocative short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov explores topics of greed, morality, and human nature. At the center of the story, a young lawyer and a banker place a wager on which punishment is worse—life in prison or the death penalty. The narrative explores the effects of isolation, the significance of time, and how the protagonists' ideas change over fifteen years.  Whereas the lawyer is not allowed to see human beings, hear human voices, or receive letters outside the prison, rather, the lawyer studied life, read, and wrote letters for fifteen years.
